

The usefulness of the Start Menu is greatly reduced in tablet mode. Sure you can tap to see all apps but desktop mode shows you don't need to. All the useful information on the left of the menu in desktop mode is gone, and only the (now enlarged) live tiles remain.

It's big enough to easily operate by tapping items with a finger or the pen.Ĭontrast that with the image above of the Start Menu in tablet mode. It provides easy access to most everything you want to do at a given time. As shown in the image above, in desktop mode you get the standard menu, with a list of frequently used apps on the left, and the live tile display to the right. The first reason to disable tablet mode is the difference between the Start Menu in the two modes. The reality is different on the Surface 3. It assumes there is no keyboard attached, and it's supposed to make controls easier to operate while taking better advantage of the display than desktop mode. Tablet mode is intended to make working with a tablet easier by touch. Even so, after hours of frustration, I've finally come to grips that the tablet mode is best turned off.
